Kensley Rowes pottery

Project of Choice: We were able to choose what we wanted to build, so I chose to build teapots using the coil method. I made two because they were small. I chose to use the coil method because it was my favorite method we were taught. If I could change anything I did during this project it would be to make them neater.

Sgraffito Six-Word Memoir Pinch Pot: This is my pinch pot we did for our first project. We wrote a six-word memoir mine was, Be calm, Play hard, Be strong. I chose these words because they have to do with the way I try to live my life. I painted my pot baby blue. Making this pot was a little difficult to keep even and not to have the clay too thick.

Coil Pot: I had a  hard time keeping my coils all the same size and even around the pot. I wasn't happy with the results of the first one, so I redid it and was much happier with it. I painted every other layer creating a pattern from red to purple.

Slab 3 Footed Cylinder: This project was a one-day project. All I had to do to build this was to make a slab, attach it to each, and pinch the bottom to make the three feet. The hardest part about making this was getting the bottom feet even.

Slab Box: This was a one day project. To make this we had to create four slabs, some the same and some different sizes. The hardest about making this was connecting all the sides together. I painted two of the side and the top, and the other two sides and handle white.

Animal Alibrije Sculpture or Painting: I had originally built a turtle with clay, but it exploded in the kiln. Since it exploded I had to paint it. For my turtle painting, I used the same patterns I was originally going to use on my clay turtle. I did have to change the colors because there were not many options for paint.

Storybook Vessel
Artist Statement: My project was originally going to be a slab cylinder but I changed it to a slab box because my cylinder broke when I tried to put it together. This project took multiple tries, I did not enjoy doing it since it was so time-consuming. My story was about the movie The Grinch that Stole Christmas. I started the story from when the Grinch was a kid to when and finished it when he learnded to love Christmas again. The story goes from the left to the right, and on the inside is the Grinches heart and the lid has a house from Whoville on it.
